Our names are Hannah Green, Amy Goldenberg, Kelly Powell and Kim Harrisberg. This year we embarked on what many people told us would be a journey of a lifetime. We belong to Zionist youth movements from South Africa and Australia (Habonim Dror and Hashomer Hatzair) and came to Israel on our gap years, filled with Jewish and Zionist idealism.
Imagine the shock of learning that on streets named after Zionist heroes sex trafficking and the enslavement of thousands of innocent women in unspeakably inhumane conditions are daily occurrences. How can the Jewish State, a refuge for those enslaved in Egypt 3500 years ago and for those who suffered the unimaginable horror of the Holocaust only 65 years ago, allow others to suffer slavery on Israel’s soil? The answer is simple: we can’t.
Thus we have decided to do all we can, however limited, to try to change the policies and priorities of the Israel Government. The Government needs to eradicate the sex slave trade (a half-billion U.S. dollar annual “industry”) from the State of Israel. Specifically, we are raising our voices to urge Israel to close her borders to trafficking; enforce already enacted stringent anti-trafficking legislation; close the hundreds of brothels and “discrete apartments”; and vigorously prosecute and imprison pimps and slavers.
We are four young adults still firmly devoted to Zionist endeavor, even if we are now far less naïve about its complications. We cannot effectively urge such change alone. We need your help to urge and pressure the Government of Israel to address this evil and create a country we can proudly call the Jewish Homeland of the 21st century.
