Writing to MKs to support criminalization of prostitution

The summer parliamentary season of The Knesset has begun and so has our work promoting The Criminal Prohibition of Consumption of Prostitution Services and Community Treatment Bill. The Bill, submitted by MK Shuli Mualem-Refaeli (Habayit Hayehudi) and MK Zehava Galon (Meretz), was written by TFHT and is formally supported by 40 MKs. It will soon be brought to the Ministerial Committee and we are doing everything within our power to gain the Committee’s support, thus increasing the probability if its passage by the Knesset.

Please see below the 61 MKs that have answered positively and/or signed on to bills fighting prostitution by incriminating its clients:

Write to other MKs to join and support as well!

In re: Requesting your support of the prohibition of consumption of sexual services and rehabilitation of prostituted persons

Dear MK,

Prostitution is one of the harshest, most violent phenomena in Israel society, directly related to poverty, sexual assault, crime, trafficking and the abuse of women, men and adolescents. According to The National Survey on Prostitution in Israel published last year, there are currently 12,500 prostituted people in Israel, 95% of whom are women and girls, 10% of whom are minors. According to the survey, 97% of prostituted women are Israeli citizens. Further, it was reported 80% of prostituted women wish to leave prostitution if they had the support to do so.

Today there is growing, vigorous public and media discussion about the policy Israel should adopt regarding prostitution. There are four proposed bills dealing with prohibition of consumption of prostitution (i.e. the “Nordic Model”) that will be discussed in the Knesset.

World-wide research reveals that implementing the ”Nordic Model” leads to an immediate, significant decrease in prostitution and trafficking even as it contradicts the claim that prostitution will “go underground” due to this policy.  The “Nordic Model” demonstrates the best way to eliminate prostitution is by acting to reduce demand by deterring the client.

I am reaching out to you as an activist of the Task Force on Human Trafficking and Prostitution which authored and promotes The Criminal Prohibition of Consumption of Prostitution Services and Community Treatment Bill, submitted by MK Shuli Mualem-Refaeli (Habayit Hayehudi) and MK Zehava Galon (Meretz) and formally supported by 40 MKs.

The “Nordic Model” has gained widespread, growing support – 61 MKs declare they will support it. I call upon you to join them and express your support for the Bill and its implementation in this current Knesset session. It is an opportunity to remedy a grievous, moral injustice and bring relief to the victims of prostitution.

Please note The National Survey on Prostitution in Israel reports 76% of the Israeli public expects the Knesset and government to act now to eliminate prostitution.

Therefore, I appreciate your prompt consideration of the bills to prohibit consumption of prostitution in Israel and fervently hope you will support the relevant legislation when it comes to the Knesset floor.
